Girls 2006 National League PRO Recap

This past weekend the RUSA FC G06 Gold girls traveled to Florida to compete in the Nation League PRO. This was the first event of the season and it was held at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando. The event featured the top 48 teams from across the country.

Game #1 was played at 8:00am on Friday morning against the #1 ranked team from Tennessee. The game was back and forth with both teams creating chances and searching for a goal. RUSA FC went down 0-1 about 10 minutes into the second half. After going down RUSA applied a lot of pressure the rest of the game and only the crossbar and post were able to keep them from the points, losing 0-1.

Game #2 was played early on Saturday morning with a thick fog blanketing the fields at ESPN. The second opponent for the RUSA FC girls was Louisiana state champions Baton Rouge SC. The pace of the game was intense and both teams worked hard to create chances. It was BRSC that found the net first though breaking though to score with 30 minutes left. RUSA responded and created a bunch of good chances before Mia Abbey slid a short pass to McKenna Chisholm just out side the box. McKenna drilled a shot into the bottom corner tying the game at 1-1. The pressure didn’t stop with RUSA hitting the crossbar again after a great combination broke the BRSC defense down. The game ended 1-1 with RUSA FC picking up thier first point of the event.

Game #3 featured RUSA against the #1 ranked team in Indiana, Indy Premier. The girls brought their best on Sunday and Indy Premiere was in for a tough game. From the opening whistle RUSA was on the front foot creating chances and smothering their opponents attacks time and again. Two shots found the crossbar in the first half but the game stayed tied 0-0 at through the first half. In the second half, the RUSA girls finally broke through when Annabella Ramirez picked the ball up near midfield, bust past a defender and slid a perfectly weighted pass to a cutting Mia Abbey. Mia found the net from just inside the box and RUSA was up 1-0 with 20 minutes to play. It wasn’t long before RUSA found the net again. After a nice combination of passes, Riayn DiMeo slid a nice pass into Mia Abbey who was aggressive off the dribble beating two Indy defenders before rocketing a shot into the back of the net. The game ended 2-0 with RUSA pickingup their first win.

RUSA Director and G06 coach Justin Abbey had this to say about the weekend. “This was an incredible experience for the girls and the families that traveled to Orlando! We have worked hard to get to this point and earn our spot in the National League PRO. We came down here hoping to play our best and put our girls on display. We had D1 coaches watching every game and made some great contacts. We had a successful weekend and we got some invaluable experience that will only make us better! We are coming home a better team”!

The girls will now have off until after the holidays before starting back up training in January. They will be playing the Maryland State champions in a neutral site game in early March before traveling to Arizona for the final three games of the season in late March with a chance to qualifying directly into the National Championships this summer!
